Can the ladder be on either side?

No, the ladder can only be placed on the left side.

Are the desk and bookshelf attached or could they be moved and used separately ?

Yes, you can move and use the desk but we don't recommend it.

Can this be assembled without the ladder?

We do not recommend assembling this low loft bed without the ladder.

what is the age recommendation for this bed? Would it be safe for a 6 year old?

Generally, we recommend raised loft beds for children 6 years and up - but you know your child best! For younger children, we recommend the staircase entry for raised beds, as this is the safest and easiest way to access a raised bed like a Bunk or Loft.

If we were to get an 8 inch mattress, how much railing would be left protecting the child from rolling off?

Our beds have a total of 15" of guard rail space so with an 8" mattress you will have 6" of protection!
