If we were to get an 8 inch mattress, how much railing would be left protecting the child from rolling off?

Our beds have a total of 14" of guard rail space so with an 8" mattress you will have 6" of protection!

When assembling, is it possible to assemble without the desk? Save it for a few years later?

The loft bed can be assembled without the desk, and the desk can be assembled later.

Can a twin XL mattress fit?

This bed was designed to fit a standard twin-size mattress.

Is the book shelf and desk interchangeable, can you put them on either end of the loft bed?

Yes, you can put them on either side so it works best for the bedroom! Actually, they are just put underneath the bed. They're not attached to the loft bed.

Is the ladder able to be on the right or left side of the front of the bed?

The ladder can be only assembled on the right side of the bed just like in the image.
